Jalopnik wanted to know what its readers thought was the best garage in America. This is a trick question. You have to add "except Jay Leno's garage, that is." So this is a list which has private collections (not open to the public), enthusiast garages, curated musea and factory collections. Some of the better known names, in no particular order are:
So that was the list. Feel free to comment or add to it. Or wait, I am going to make a couple of additions right now.
The collection is vintage Americana - and the pride of the floor is
the lowest mileage Tucker ever. My personal favourite is the Cord
Coffinhead (left). American auto design has rarely yielded such sinister
results.
Also this strange little place half a mile from the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. The joint is the owner's own shrine to Corvettes and lesser American iron. But he also has a few cars from across the pond, including - if I remember correctly, an absolutely darling MG roadster. Unfortunately, my google-fu seems to have deserted me. I cannot find any online presence of this little gem. Took my long suffering missus down there last summer. Ya'all should try finding this place if you are in the neighbourhood. A pic from there.
- Jay Leno's garage
- Jim Glickenhaus' warehouse
- The Lingenfelter collection
- Ralph Lauren's cars. He owns a Bugatti type 57 Atlantique.
- Magnus Walker's collection of timeless 911s
- The Nethercutt Museum in California
- The famed Peterson, also in California
- The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green where you can sometimes help build your own Corvette.
- That strange place underneath the Mazda corporate headquarters, where rumour has it that a LeMans winning 787 is stashed away.
- The Mullin Auto museum, yes, also in Cali. This one boasts the Hispano Suiza Dubonnet Xenia. Yes, a mouthful of a name. But look at the car!
So that was the list. Feel free to comment or add to it. Or wait, I am going to make a couple of additions right now.
